Titan triggerfish is a large species of triggerfish that belongs to the family of balistidae. Triggerfish are seen in the Indo-West and Central Pacific region, southwestern to north-western Western Australia, the central coast of New South Wales, and the Great Barrier Reef. This fish is easily found singly or in pairs protecting their areas over slopes of deep lagoons and seaward reefs. Juveniles are mainly found close to isolated patches of branching corals over protected shallow, sandy areas of reefs. The titan triggerfish is diurnal and solitary.
They are called mustache triggerfish as they have black markings above the mouth that look like a mustache. Its body is heavily scaled and is generally green to dark grey in color, with yellow or green fins with black tips, and a lower jaw, dark grey or purple in color. In Thailand, the fish are predominantly yellow in color.
Although it will sometimes eat smaller fish, the titan triggerfish is not solely a piscivore. Instead, its primary diet consists of several species of echinoderms, crustaceans, mollusks, tube worms, and living coral. They have powerful sharp teeth. The titan triggerfish uses its powerful bite to break pieces off and crush them to extract the meat. These are the workers of the reef, often busy turning over rocks, stirring up the sand, and biting off pieces of branching coral. This activity often stirs up nearby coral parts and small organisms, allowing other fish to feast on the leftovers.
While individuals have been observed in the wild eating juvenile crown-of-thorns starfish, sea urchins seem to be the favored target, including the various long-spined, somewhat venomous Diadema species. The titan gets past their defenses by seizing the tips of the spines in its mouth and flipping the urchin upside down. This exposes the relatively unprotected underside of the urchin so the titan triggerfish can dig the meat out of the spiny shell.
The diet of the titan triggerfish makes its impact on the reef rather neutral, for while it feeds on the corals and tube worms of the reef itself, it also feeds on other reef predators and helps to keep their populations in check.
They have independently rotating eyes, and their pelvic fins are fused into a single spine.
They have 2 dorsal fins, the first of which is comprised of 3 spines, and this is where the triggerfish derives its name. The spine is also held erect as a warning to other fish to stay away. If this warning is ignored, they are known to charge at anything and anyone. At night or when threatened, the fish will wedge itself into a coral crevasse and erect its dorsal fin wedging itself in tight. The first spine is locked in place by the second spine and once that's in place, the fish is virtually immovable, resulting in the titan triggerfish not being considered an easy meal. Although not much is known about what in particular preys on titans, one thing is for sure, they can defend themselves quite well.
The triggerfish search for mating partners and are known to do mating dances with the chosen one. Both sexes will vigorously protect the nesting area. While nesting or not, the male is usually aggressive and can attack unprovoked; a female guarding her nest can be equally aggressive. They will deftly defend the nest even against intruders much bigger than themselves. The territory around the nest is roughly cone-shaped and divers who accidentally enter it may be attacked. The threat posture includes the triggerfish facing the intruder while holding its first dorsal spine erect. It may also roll onto its side, allowing it a better look at the intruder. Their bites can cause serious infection as they contain a natural poison called Ciguatoxin. The titan triggerfish will not always bite but can swim at snorkelers and divers escorting them out of their territory.
Sexually distinctive, the titan triggerfish will lay eggs that are fertilized externally. Eggs are laid after some preparation of the nest. They create a depression in the sand of the chosen nesting area by fanning it with their caudal and dorsal fins. Titan triggerfish spawn for about 4 days a month. The male will guard the nest and blow water over the eggs, ensuring a good supply of fresh water and oxygen. Once the larvae hatch, they will swim away, presumably into the protection afforded by the coral reef. Early on in the life cycle, zooplankton will be the source of nourishment until such time as the juvenile has matured enough to take on other delicacies of the coral reef.

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the world's largest lizard species and is endemic to the Indonesian. The maximum length of 3 meters, and weighing up to approximately 70 kilograms. Komodo dragons can be found in Komodo National Park, which covers three major islands, namely Komodo, Rinca, and Padar. The islands are volcanic in origin, rugged and hilly, and covered with both forest and savanna grassland.
The Komodo dragon prefers hot and dry places and typically lives in dry, open grassland, savanna, and tropical forest at low elevations. Some dragons scratch shallow burrows to rest in at night to keep warm and as a cool shelter to retreat to from the heat of the day. They can swim, They can swim between the five islands with ease.
As with many other reptiles, the Komodo dragon primarily relies on its tongue to detect, taste, and smell stimuli, rather than using the nostrils. With the help of a favorable wind and its habit of swinging its head from side to side as it walks, a Komodo dragon may be able to detect carrion from 4–9.5 km away.
These giant lizards are apex predators and ruthless carnivores, It has about 60 curved, serrated teeth that can be up to 2.5 cm in length, and a yellow, forked tongue. Its skin is reinforced by armored scales bearing tiny bones called osteoderms that make it function like a chain-mail. The heavy armor makes the lizard nearly untouchable. they will eat any meat, from large deer to even humans and water buffalo. The combination of venom and multiple lacerations from the lizards' sharp, serrated teeth is what makes the dragons so deadly. If the prey escapes, the lizard will simply follow it at a leisurely pace. That’s because the dragon’s bite contains deadly bacteria that will eventually kill its intended meal. Soon, other Komodo dragons will join in on the feast, fighting over the best pieces. Komodo dragons eat extremely fast. They have been seen consuming 5.5 pounds of meat in 1 minute. Because of their slow metabolism, large dragons can survive on as few as 12 meals a year.
Once a year, when they’re ready to mate, female Komodo dragons give off a scent in their feces for males to follow. When a male dragon locates a female, he scratches her back and licks her body. If she licks him back, they mate. Males also sometimes wrestle with one another to earn mating rights.
When there aren’t any males around, female Komodo dragons have other means of reproducing: As they have both male and female sex chromosomes, female dragons can reproduce asexually in a process called parthenogenesis. Due to the availability of prey and the physical condition of the female. Female dragons do not breed every year.
Females often nest in the same nest location each time. To reduce the risk of predators such as snakes or boars preying on the eggs. Female Komodo dragons dig several additional holes near their real nest in an attempt to camouflage it.
The female lays between 15 and 30 eggs and guards her nest and eggs for the first few months, and then leaves the nest, returning nine months later when the eggs are about to hatch. Female Komodos only care about their eggs, not the juveniles. Life for a young dragon is not easy. As soon as the baby hatches, it scrambles out of the nest and scurries up the nearest tree so the adults won’t eat it and stay in the trees until they reach 3 to 5 years of age. Fortunately for the babies, the adults are too heavy and clumsy to climb trees. Youngsters live in the trees eating anything that fits into their mouths, eggs, grasshoppers, beetles, and geckos. To avoid being eaten by the adults, the young Komodos are also known to roll in fecal matter thereby picking up odor that the adults are likely to avoid. When they are about 4 years old and 4 feet long, the Komodo dragons are large enough to try life on the ground. Komodo dragons take approximately 8 to 9 years to mature and may live for up to 30 years.
They do not thrive in captivity where they become susceptible to numerous infections. Thus, it is important to keep Komodo dragon habitats safe and protect the species against other threats.
Volcanic activity, earthquakes, loss of habitat, fire, tourism, loss of prey due to poaching, and illegal poaching of the dragons themselves have all contributed to the vulnerable status of the Komodo dragon. A major future threat to the species is climate change via both aridification and sea-level rise, which can affect the low-lying habitats and valleys that the Komodo dragon depends on, as Komodo dragons do not range into the higher-altitude regions of the islands they inhabit.
The Komodo dragon is classified by the IUCN as Endangered and is listed on the IUCN Red List. They are protected under Indonesian law, and Komodo National Park was founded in 1980 to aid protection efforts.

Polymita is a genus of large, air-breathing land snails, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks in the family Helminthoglyptidae. These snails are endemic to Cuba.
Polymita inhabits the subtropical hardwood forests growing on the coastal plains and mountains of the Eastern end of Cuba. The Polymita displays a marked preference for certain tree species. The preferred or host tree is; Hicaco (Chrysobalanus icaco). Other host trees are varieties of Poisonwood (Metopium toxifera, brownei ), Gumbo Limbo (Bursera simarouba), Hicaquillo (Coccoloba retusa), and other smooth-barked hardwoods.
The Polymita snails feed on the confervoid algae, fungi, sooty molds, and lichens which grow on subtropical hardwood trees and shrubs. Polymita does not eat the leaves or bark of the host tree. Feeding paths may be seen where the snail has scraped the algae and lichen growths with their radula. The quality of the habitat, that is, the amount of food and type of food, affects the shell growth of the Polymita. The Polymita is a welcome guest in the Coffee and Guava orchards of the Oriente province as they eat the sooty molds on the leaves and branches of the trees.
It’s no surprise that land snails like Polymita would be so successful on an island. With the ability to secrete a mucus seal around their shell openings, these invertebrates can go dormant for long periods without drying out. This makes them good travelers, hardy enough to survive a trip at sea on vegetation that comes loose from the mainland during a storm or flood.
The beauty of these striped snails is a many-splendored thing, and differences in color occur not just between species, but also within individuals of a single species. Some scientists suggest that the variations might confuse predators, preventing them from homing in on these snails as a predictable meal, but the question is far from settled.
Polymita is preyed upon by a variety of vertebrates and invertebrates; birds, rats, and the most destructive enemies of all; bulldozers and the ensuing destruction of habitat. Habitat destruction is by far the greatest threat to the Polymita.
If Cuba is the paradise for land-shells, Polymita must be Adam and Eve's Apple. It has such a beautiful species that it seduces the human mind. Both for good (well-illustrated and emblematic for the Cuban malacofauna) and for worse (because of its beauty its species are being over-collected and used as souvenirs). The threats by human activities have plagued these species and eventually may drive them into extinction.

Aye-ayes can be found only on the island of Madagascar. These rare animals may not look like primates at first glance, but they are related to chimpanzees, apes, and humans. The aye-aye is the largest nocturnal lemur, best known for its distinct appearance and unusual diet. This strange lemur is a Frankenstein's monster of evolution. Ears like a bat, teeth like a rat and a witch's finger 🤣.
Aye-ayes are dark brown or black and are distinguished by a bushy tail that is larger than their body. They also feature big eyes, slender fingers, and large, sensitive ears. Aye-ayes have pointed claws on all their fingers and toes except for their opposable big toes, which enable them to dangle from branches
The aye-aye is about 40 cm long, excluding the bushy 55- to 60-cm tail. Covered with long, coarse, dark brown or black fur, it has a short face, large eyes, and ever-growing incisors like those of rodents.
The aye-aye lives primarily on the east coast of Madagascar. Its natural habitat is rainforest or deciduous forest, but many live in cultivated areas due to deforestation. Rainforest aye-ayes, the most common, dwell in canopy areas and are usually sighted above 70 meters altitude. They sleep during the day in nests built from interwoven twigs and dead leaves up in the canopy among the vines and branches.
The aye-aye is a nocturnal and arboreal animal meaning that it spends most of its life high in the trees. Although they are known to come down to the ground on occasion, aye-ayes sleep, eat, travel, and mate in the trees and are most commonly found close to the canopy where there is plenty of cover from the dense foliage. During the day, aye-ayes sleep in spherical nests in the forks of tree branches that are constructed out of leaves, branches, and vines before emerging after dark to begin their hunt for food.
The aye-aye is an omnivore and commonly eats seeds, fruits, nectar, and fungi, but also insect larvae and honey. Aye-ayes tap on the trunks and branches of trees at a rate of up to eight times per second and listen to the echo produced to find hollow chambers. Once a chamber is found, they chew a hole into the wood and get grubs out of that hole with their highly adapted narrow and bony middle fingers. It's also useful for scooping the flesh out of coconuts and other fruits that supplement the animal's insect diet.
The aye-aye begins foraging between 30 minutes before and three hours after sunset. Up to 80% of the night is spent foraging in the canopy, separated by occasional rest periods. It climbs trees by making successive vertical leaps, much like a squirrel. Horizontal movement is more difficult, but the aye-aye rarely descends to jump to another tree, and can often travel up to 4 km a night.
Aye-aye is solitary animals that mark their large home range with scent. The smaller territories of females often overlap those of at least a couple of males. Male aye-ayes tend to share their territories with other males and are even known to share the same nests (although not at the same time), and can seemingly tolerate each other until they hear the call of a female that is looking for a mate.
Though foraging is usually solitary, they occasionally forage in groups. Individual movements within the group are coordinated using both vocalizations and scent signals.
Aye-ayes are commonly thought to be bad omens by some of the Malagasy people, the forests of Madagascar are being destroyed, and the farmers will kill aye-ayes to protect their crops and for poaching. However, there is no direct evidence to suggest aye-ayes pose any legitimate threat to crops and therefore are killed based on superstition. The aye-aye is often viewed as a harbinger of evil and killed on sight. Others believe, if one points its narrowest finger at someone, they are marked for death. Some say that the appearance of an aye-aye in a village predicts the death of a villager, and the only way to prevent this is to kill it. The Sakalava people go so far as to claim aye-ayes sneak into houses through the thatched roofs and murder the sleeping occupants by using their middle fingers to puncture their victims' aorta. This has led to the death of so many aye-ayes. Such hunting, coupled with habitat destruction, have put aye-aye's population at risk. Today they are protected by law. Some researchers believe aye-aye comes from the phrase “I don’t know” in Malagasy, which may be because locals were afraid to speak the name.
The aye-aye is the only extant member of the genus Daubentonia and the family Daubentoniidae. It is currently classified as Endangered by the IUCN; and a second species, Daubentonia robusta (The giant aye-aye), appears to have become extinct at some point within the last 1000 years. Successful breeding colonies have been established on a few small islands near Madagascar, and some aye-ayes are kept in captivity in a few zoos outside the country.
