Coral reefs are large underwater structures composed of the skeletons of colonial marine invertebrates called coral. The coral species that build reefs are known as hermatypic, or "hard," corals because they extract calcium carbonate from seawater to create a hard, durable exoskeleton that protects their soft, sac-like bodies. Other species of corals that are not involved in reef-building are known as “soft” corals. These types of corals are flexible organisms often resembling plants and trees and include species such as sea fans and sea whips.

Each individual coral is referred to as a polyp. Coral polyps live on the calcium carbonate exoskeletons of their ancestors, adding their own exoskeleton to the existing coral structure. As the centuries pass, the coral reef gradually grows, one tiny exoskeleton at a time, until they become massive features of the marine environment.

Corals are animals and not plants. Corals are known as colonial organisms because many individual creatures live and grow while connected to each other. They are also dependent on one another for survival. Coral polyp bodies are usually clear. The bright colors that characterize many corals are actually various types of algae growing in the polyp’s tissue. The presence of the algae, specifically a type of algae called zooxanthellae, helps the coral in several ways. For one, the algae remove waste from the coral. The algae also use the coral’s waste products for photosynthesis, which is how a plant makes its own food. Byproducts of photosynthesis include oxygen and carbohydrates, which the coral consumes and uses to build reefs. The mutually beneficial relationship between coral and algae is called symbiosis.

Corals reproduce both sexually and asexually. Externally fertilized eggs develop during synchronized spawning. Polyps across a reef simultaneously release eggs and sperm into the water en masse. The release of eggs or planula usually occurs at night. During this process, the larvae may use several different cues to find a suitable location for settlement.

Coral reefs are sometimes known as the “rainforests of the sea.” Nearly a quarter of all the fish in the sea rely on healthy coral reefs. Corals provide habitats for fish and other organisms in the ocean. Reefs are home to a variety of animals, including fish, seabirds, sponges, cnidarians (which includes some types of corals and jellyfish), worms, crustaceans (including shrimp, cleaner shrimp, spiny lobsters, and crabs), mollusks (including cephalopods), echinoderms (including starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers), sea squirts, sea turtles and sea snakes. Aside from humans, mammals are rare on coral reefs, with visiting cetaceans such as dolphins the main exception. A few species feed directly on corals, while others graze on algae on the reef. Reef biomass is positively related to species diversity. The shelter created by these coral colonies makes reefs a vibrant biodiversity hotspot where coral, fish, algae, and hundreds of other species live together in a bustling ecosystem.

Coral reefs form some of the world's most productive ecosystems, providing complex and varied marine habitats that support a wide range of other organisms. Fringing reefs just below low tide level have a mutually beneficial relationship with mangrove forests at high tide level and seagrass meadows in between the reefs protect the mangroves and seagrass from strong currents and waves that would damage them or erode the sediments in which they are rooted, while the mangroves and seagrass protect the coral from large influxes of silt, freshwater, and pollutants. This level of variety in the environment benefits many coral reef animals, which, for example, may feed in the seagrass and use the reefs for protection or breeding.

Coral reefs deliver ecosystem services for tourism, fisheries, and shoreline protection. Coral reefs are fragile, partly because they are sensitive to water conditions. They are under threat from excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), rising temperatures, pollution, oceanic acidification, collecting live corals for the aquarium market, mining coral for building materials, overfishing (e.g., from blast fishing, cyanide fishing, spearfishing on scuba), sunscreen use, and harmful land-use practices, including runoff and seeps (e.g., from injection wells and cesspools), and a warming climate are some of the many ways that people damage reefs all around the world every day.

An artificial reef is a human-created underwater structure, typically built to promote marine life in areas with a generally featureless bottom, to control erosion, block ship passage, block the use of trawling nets, or improve surfing.

Many reefs are built using objects that were built for other purposes, such as by sinking oil rigs (through the Rigs-to-Reefs program), scuttling ships, or deploying rubble or construction debris. Other artificial reefs are purpose-built (e.g. the reef balls) from PVC or concrete. Shipwrecks may become artificial reefs when preserved on the seafloor. Regardless of construction method, artificial reefs generally provide hard surfaces where algae and invertebrates such as barnacles, corals, and oysters attach; the accumulation of attached marine life, in turn, provides intricate structures and food for assemblages of fish.

Artificial reefs can show quick increases in local fish population rehabilitation, coral reef, and algae growth. However, far more than half the amount of biomass found on artificial reefs is attracted from other areas rather than developing there. Artificial reefs do not increase fish populations. Instead, they operate as fish aggregating devices bringing in fish from other reefs. Concentrating fish on a reef also makes for easier fishing.

The fish attracted to artificial reef zones vary from reef to reef depending on their age, size, and structure. Large reef structures such as large sunken ships attract larger fish.

The use of shipwrecks in rocky zones creates a new trophic structure for the local ecosystem. They become the home for certain species and many nearby animals migrate to the shipwreck. This unbalances the natural ecosystem and has the potential to alter many other habitats.

Thousands of popular wreck diving sites throughout the world are shipwrecks sunk as artificial reefs. Some of these wrecks were sunk deliberately to attract divers. The USS Spiegel Grove and USS Oriskany in Florida, USS Indra and USS Aeolus in North Carolina, and Bianca C. in Grenada draw thousands of divers annually.

There are many factors that can make an artificial reef a success or failure, and even the same techniques and materials may work well in some situations and not in others.

The materials used in most artificial reefs often cause pollution by releasing chemicals and nutrients that are not naturally found in reef environments. Ships can release polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), asbestos, iron, lead paint, and anti-fouling paint leaches into the ocean and enters the food chain.

It is important to recognize that artificial reefs only work in areas where water quality is still conducive to coral growth. Artificial reefs are a great tool for marine resource managers, but it is only one tool on our belt. It needs to be used in conjunction with a wide variety of other actions such as establishing rules and regulations, reducing local land and sea-based threats, reducing over-fishing/over-use, and other mitigation or protection methods to create an effective and holistic coral reef restoration program.

Elephant shrews also called jumping shrews or sengis, are small insectivorous mammals native to Africa, belonging to the family Macroscelididae, in the order Macroscelidea. Their traditional common English name "elephant shrew" comes from a perceived resemblance between their long noses and the trunk of an elephant, and their superficial similarity with shrews (family Soricidae) in the order Eulipotyphla. However, phylogenetic analysis revealed that elephant shrews are not classified with true shrews, but are more closely related to elephants than shrews. They are widely distributed across the southern part of Africa, and although common nowhere, can be found in almost any type of habitat, from the Namib Desert to boulder-strewn outcrops in South Africa to thick forest.

The creature is one of the fastest small mammals, having been recorded to reach speeds of 28.8 kilometers per hour. They vary in size from about 10 to 30 centimeters, from 50 to 500 grams. Their lifespans are about two and a half to four years in the wild.

Although mostly diurnal and very active, they are difficult to trap and very seldom seen; elephant shrews are wary, well camouflaged, and adept at dashing away from threats. Several species make a series of cleared pathways through the undergrowth, the pathway provides an obstacle-free escape route.

Elephant shrews mainly eat insects, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, and earthworms. They play a significant role in maintaining natural checks of insect populations. An elephant shrew uses its nose to find prey and uses its tongue to flick small food into its mouth, much like an anteater. Some elephant shrews also feed on small amounts of plant matter, especially new leaves, seeds, and small fruits.

Elephant shrews are not highly social animals, but many live in monogamous pairs, which share and defend their home territory, marked using scent glands. Rhynchocyon species also dig small conical holes in the soil, bandicoot-style, but others may make use of natural crevices, or make leaf nests. Although they live in pairs, the partners do not care much for each other and their sole purpose of even associating with the opposite sex is for reproduction. Social behaviors are not very common and they even have separate nests. The one or two young are well developed at birth; they can run within a few hours.

Female elephant shrews undergo a menstrual cycle similar to that of human females and the species is one of the few nonprimate mammals to do so. Elephant shrews were used in the 1940s to study the human menstruation cycle. The elephant shrew mating period lasts for several days. After mating, the pair will return to their solitary habits. After a gestation period varying from 45 to 60 days, the female will bear litters of one to three young several times a year. The young are born relatively well developed but remain in the nest for several days before venturing outside. After about 15 days, the young will begin the migratory phase of their lives, which lessens their dependency on their mother. The young will then establish their home ranges and will become sexually active within 41–46 days.

They are intolerant of close neighbors, and should one trespass into the territory it will be violently evicted. Aggressive encounters involve screaming, sparring, snapping, and kicking, all of which can happen so rapidly that it appears to be a blur of animals tumbling on the forest floor.

Generally speaking, elephant shrews do not pose much danger to humans. Elephant shrews tend to shy away from anything that could be considered dangerous or predatory, so they do not interact with humans much at all.
