US stocks and the dollar plunged again as President Donald Trump intensified his attacks on the US central bank boss and called him "a major loser".
In a social media post, Trump called on Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell to cut interest rates "pre-emptively" to help boost the economy, and said Powell had been consistently too slow to respond to economic developments.
Trump's criticism of Powell's handling of the US economy came as his own plans for tariffs have driven a stock market sell-off and raised fears of economic recession.

Scientists have found new but tentative evidence that a faraway world orbiting another star may be home to life.
A Cambridge team studying the atmosphere of a planet called K2-18b has detected signs of molecules which on Earth are only produced by simple organisms.
K2-18b is two and a half times the size of Earth and is seven hundred trillion miles away from us.
This is the second, and more promising, time chemicals associated with life have been detected in the planet's atmosphere by Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
But the team and independent astronomers stress that more data is needed to confirm these results.

Canadian PM Mark Carney has said Canada is "not for sale" as US President Donald Trump insists the country would benefit from becoming the 51st US state.
Relations between the once close allies have been frayed in the wake of Trump's new tariff regime, as well as the comments, but the US president added that Canada's opposition to his proposal will not impact today's discussions.
Trump also said during the meeting that the US will "always" protect Canada.
He also encouraged Carney to think of the US "as a super luxury store" while talking about international trade and added that other countries will come and pay a price, and the US will give them "very good deals".

European Union member states have voted to impose an extra 25% tariffs on US imports, affecting €20.9bn (£18bn) worth of goods.
The tariffs are in response to the 25% import taxes US President Donald Trump imposed on all steel and aluminium that came into force in mid-March.
It is unclear which goods the EU is targeting, but the new tariffs will come into effect from 15 April.
